Golf ups and downs
What a turnaround in performance at the golf range, Thursday was the worse range session ever Friday was one of the best. In Friday’s golf range practice session I scored a 9/10, this is only the second time ever I’ve rated a session so highly. In fact as the last session was at the beginning of November, just over one month in to my Golf Challenge my expectations of performance were less exacting as they are now so I can safely say this was the best session ever.
Getting to the range and expecting rain again, I went all the way to the last bay, as this has a wall behind me, so if it did start to rain I’d have a little protection from the elements. Fortunately the expected rain never materialised. During my grooving session with the 7 iron out of 48 balls I never duffed one shot, that’s the first time ever I’ve been that consistent. I did hit more shots wildly left than usual, as the number of balls hit like this is usual around 10, this time it was 15.
I believe the reason for this increase in consistency with my golf is down to the slowness of the backswing. I now take the golf club back almost in slow motion until I get to the top. This helps me get the hands in the right position at the top of the swing using the shoulder turn to get them there rather than using the arms and lifting. Thus being in the correct position at the top enables me to get more consistency in the downswing and follow through. One issue I’ve noticed creeping in is, I maintain this slow backswing whilst grooving, but when I move on to the other irons I then have a tendency to speed up, especially with the 9 iron and wedges. This I have to be aware off and make sure I keep a consistency speed and tempo with all clubs all the time.
My backswing now is that slow you wouldn’t need a video to see if I’m doing it right or wrong. I do not intend on keeping it this slow, this is just a method to build the golf swing up from. This enables me to start transferring the weight to the left more affectively and consequently enables me to get the hips turning and out-of-the-way at impact and thus follow through correctly. All this just from going very slow in the backswing is proving very affective in improving my golf consistency.
